Allergies
Common allergy triggers
Allergies happen when your immune system reacts to a substance it mistakenly identifies as a threat. Those substances — called allergens — can range from the air you breathe to the food on your plate.
- Animals: dust mite waste, pet dander, bed bugs
- Foods: wheat, nuts, shellfish, milk, eggs
- Drugs: sulfa drugs, penicillin
- Mold: airborne spores from mold
- Plants: pollens from weeds, grass, and trees; resin from poison ivy and poison oak
- Water or shampoo trapped in the ear
- Other: latex, metals
Allergies FAQ
Yes. Indigo Urgent Care can evaluate and treat mild to moderate allergy symptoms at all of our Washington State and North Idaho locations. We accept walk-ins and offer same-day online scheduling — no appointment required. If your symptoms are severe or you're showing signs of anaphylaxis, go to your nearest emergency room or call 911.
Allergies and colds can feel similar — runny nose, congestion, and sneezing are common to both. The key differences: cold symptoms typically develop over a few days and often include a fever or body aches, while allergy symptoms tend to appear quickly after exposure to a trigger and often include itchy eyes or nose. If you're not sure, an Indigo clinician can help you figure it out.
Seasonal allergies — also called hay fever or allergic rhinitis — commonly cause sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and fatigue. Symptoms typically peak in spring when tree pollen is high and again in late summer and fall when grass and weed pollen levels rise.
Many allergy medications — including antihistamines and some nasal sprays — are available over the counter. However, if OTC options aren't providing enough relief, a clinician at Indigo can evaluate your symptoms and prescribe something stronger. A same-day visit or video appointment can often get you to the right treatment faster than trial and error on your own.
They can. Allergy symptoms sometimes become more pronounced with repeated exposure to a trigger, and new allergies can develop at any age — even in adulthood. If your symptoms have worsened recently or you're reacting to something new, it's worth getting checked out.
Yes. Indigo sees patients of all ages, including children. If your child is experiencing allergy symptoms that aren't responding to OTC medication, or if you're concerned about a new reaction, bring them in to any of our Washington State or North Idaho locations.
In many cases, yes. If you're dealing with typical allergy symptoms — like seasonal congestion, itchy eyes, or a known reaction — a video visit with an Indigo clinician can be a convenient way to get evaluated and receive a prescription without leaving home. For more complex or severe reactions, an in-person visit is the better option.
